H5P: How to Build Interactive Learning Materials in Ufora

What is H5P?

H5P is open source education technology for building interactive learning materials. It contains over 30 different content types for online learning pathways, including quizzes, presentations and online simulation exercises.

Take a look at the animations below for some examples:

The self-authoring tool H5P for building interactive learning pathways is used at over 400 universities worldwide. Adding interactive H5P elements to online learning environments like Ufora (Brightspace) encourages students to interact with the online learning materials. Because H5P makes it easier to chart student progress, it an serve as a useful addition to existing Ufora functionalities. H5P offers various possibilities for formative assessment with immediate and automated feedback.

H5P also offers tools to enrich photos and videos and to apply more structure to your online learning materials. With H5P you are able to offer your students a more interactive and potentially more interesting learning experience: they will have more learning options, more opportunities to test themselves, and to explore the online contents in various ways.  What is more, you can easily share H5P content with colleagues, as well as adapt and reuse it.

Keep in mind, though, that in every approach to blended learning the online content must be suited to your target audience, the type of blend and the study load. Try to avoid “interactive overload” in your online learning pathways. Discard activities and interactions that do not contribute to student learning.  Always consider whether or not a specific activity suits the objectives and learning outcomes of your course unit, and whether or not this activity has its proper place in the learning pathway. (constructive alignment).

When to Use?

Interactive Learning Materials

With H5P, you can integrate interactive course elements like e.g.

  • accordions,
  • sliders, and
  • photos with hotspots in a trice.

You can then use all these elements to provide the students with (additional) information and to let them engage with the online course materials in an interactive manner. What is more, you can easily share H5P content with colleagues, as well as adapt and reuse it.

Formative Assessment

H5P is a powerful tool for online formative assessment. You can use H5P content to draw up simple self tests and other assessment methods to gauge the students’ mastery of the learning contents in real time.  One of the advantages of H5P is that you can introduce these types of exercises throughout your Ufora course.

Tips

The video below shows you how to make interactive learning materials even faster with H5P.  It shows you how to open H5P in a new tab and how to draw up questions, answer options and feedback using textual templates.  This page and this topic will receive frequent updates as H5P is put into use further.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does H5P allow for the use of videos?

Yes. You can enrich video contents with H5P. Please note, however, that H5P has only limited storage capacity.  Save your video clip to the appropriate environment, like e.g. our new video platform Panopto, which will become operational soon.  Video clips saved to YouTube or Panopto can be integrated into H5P using their hyperlinks.  Find out more information on the H5P general information page.

Can I use my Ghent University account to log in to H5P?

No, for the time being H5P can only be used via Ufora (‘insert stuff’ and ‘existing activities’).

Can I use H5P for summative assessment?

No, because tech savvy students will always find a way to cheat and obtain full marks. You must not use H5P for exam purposes or other forms of summative assessment.

Does H5P allow for the use of formulas and/or code?

Yes, H5P allows for the use of LaTex to render formulas.  In addition, you go to account settings and activate ‘inline code’ and ‘code snippets’.

What is the difference between H5P.com and H5P.org?

H5P.com is the paying (SAAS) version of H5P. Education institutions and businesses pay for the hosting, support and integration in their online (learning) environment.  H5P.org hosts the open source code of H5P. Anyone can host and integrate H5P in existing content management systems (Wordpress, Drupal, etc.) and use this digital learning technology on their own.

Where is content that I have made being saved? Is it publicly accessible?

Your H5P-made contents are saved to Ghent University’s H5P website.  They are only visible to you and not publicly accessible, unless you choose otherwise.  Interactive H5P contents published in a Ufora course are only visible to students enrolled in that particular course.

What is the difference between H5P and Ufora (Brightspace) tests and self-tests?

H5P allows for easy integration of a more diverse set of question types in closer proximity to the respective learning contents.  You can add H5P exercises to pages, discussions, etc.  H5P also allows for more automated feedback after each question and for each answer option. Ufora tests and self-tests are more standalone and can be used for more thorough assessment.

In addition to exercises, H5P also allows for interactive media like e.g. interactive photos with hotspots, sliders, presentations, audio and video files, which you can publish anywhere in your Ufora course.
